In October 1933, the Guangdong Provincial Library merged with the Guangzhou City Sun Yat-sen Library. In July 1950, it was renamed the Guangdong People's Library, and in May 1955, the Guangdong People's Library and the Guangzhou Sun Yat-sen Library were officially merged into the Guangdong Sun Yat-sen Library. In 2002, the library was renamed the Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province.
By the end of 2017, the Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province had a collection of 8.6118 million volumes (items) of general literature, including 8.4701 million volumes of physical books (6.8975 million volumes of regular books, including 270,700 volumes of foreign-language books), 117,100 audiovisual items, and 24,600 microfilms. The library also had approximately 24,600 types of periodicals, totaling 885,900 volumes, and digital resources (including e-books, e-newspapers, and video databases) amounting to approximately 8.6447 million volumes (items).
